UPDATE : Death toll rises to 9 in Washington subway train collision

Washington subway train collideRescue workers located three more bodies in the wreckage early Tuesday, raising the death toll to nine people following a crash between two subway trains in Washington.

A release on the department’s Web site says rescue workers located three more bodies in the wreckage late Monday night. All three were declared dead at the scene.

One Metro transit train smashed into the rear of another train at the height of the Monday evening rush hour. The trailing train jackknifed violently into the air and fell atop the first.

Preliminary reports said six people were confirmed dead, including the operator of the trailing train.

Washington subway train collideAccording to preliminary reports, a collision between two subway trains on the Red Line between Takoma and Fort Totten in Washington, has left six people dead and more than 70 were left  injured.

D.C. Fire/EMS spokesman Alan Etter said: “We have a number of injuries … And we have dozens of injuries. The fire department is still in the process of extricating people from the cars. We’re using heavy rescue equipment to cut open the cars to get whoever’s trapped in there out.”

Reports said one of the trains had been standing still for at least 10 minutes when one train crashed into it. The crash happened at around 5 p.m. EDT took place on the system’s red line, Metro’s busiest, which runs below ground for much of its length but is at ground level at the site near the Maryland border.
