R. Federer Vs. A. Roddick: Wimbledon Finals Update and Analysis

July 5th, 2009
federer vs roddick

All eyes in the tennis world are on Roger Federer and Andy Roddick as they battle for Wimbledon men’s singles final today.

Roddick Wins the First Set, 7-5
Roddick is hitting huge serves up the T in the deuce. He is looking to attack the Federer backhand if he can get a short ball. I’m thinking back to the incredible backhand volley he hit to save the 5-5 game in the first set.

Roddick weathered a slew of unforced errors that game, which, if he wins this match, will be seen as the turning point. I thought Federer outplayed him in the first set, until Roddick broke him in a loose game for Federer.

Federer Wins the Second Set, 7-6 (6)
What a turnaround by Federer! The second set was on Roddick’s racket, but he badly misplayed a tough high backhand volley. Federer made him play a difficult shot by going high with topspin up the line. It looked as though Roddick may have thought the ball was going long as he appeared indecisive. Give Federer credit for hanging around when things looked dire. Read more…
